I use a Shimano Altus 9 speed derailleur and a SRAM 10 speed derailleur as they both have threaded adjusters do I need to purchase a 5 & 6mm adapter for the standard outer gear casing or should the outer gear casing be something else other than standard?

Usually Shimano is M5 and SRAM is M6-0.75. But you should verify.

Yes I know that, but do I need the adapters from cell or can I use the existing adjusters on the derailleurs?
how do you change the cable on the quantum of it breaks or becomes frayed?
